Payroll and PAYE

Operating payroll in the UK is now complex due to the information you need to operate the PAYE system. In recent times HMRC have added the Real Time information system (RTI), reduced NIC for employees under 21 and now auto enrolment.

As your employees are the best asset of the business it is important that the payroll is calculated correctly and on time.

New Employer

To set up a PAYE scheme you need to register with HMRC, either online, by telephone or via use as your agent.

Real Time Information reporting (RTI)

Under RTI you need to make online payroll submissions for each pay period detailing payments and deductions made from Employees on or before the date they are paid to the Employees.

By its very nature the RTI system means you need to keep up to date and file information in an orderly fashion.

Micro Employer

If you are a micro employer (9 or less employees) the RTI reporting rules are slightly relaxed, but you still need to report all payroll details paid by the end of the tax year.

Small Payrolls

For company Directors where you are the only Employees of the Limited company we will advise you on the payroll issues, suggest the amounts you should be paid and deal with the RTI reporting requirements.

PAYE Months

Tax months run from the 6th of the month to the 5th of the month.

PAYE/NIC payments

Tax and NIC should be paid to HMRC by the 19th of the tax month following the payment (on 22nd if paying electronically).  Employers whose average monthly payments are less than £1,500 can pay quarterly.

PAYE/NIC payment history

It is very important that your PAYE/NIC is paid on time because:-

  • HMRC will levy a late filing penalty being a percentage of PAYE/NIC due and
  • HMRC use the payment history in various ways including eligibility for CIS schemes.

Minimum wage

Employers have by law to pay a minimum wage of £6.50 to adults over the age of 21. This rises to £6.70 from 1st October 2015.
